Bio: My name is Saniya, and I am currently completing my Bachelor’s degree in Petroleum Engineering at the University of Houston. Growing up, I was an avid reader who was obsessed with the ocean. I would tell everybody that I wanted to be a scuba diver, and could spew a thousand useless facts about obscure sea creatures. From an early age, I knew that I wanted a career that involved science. On the other hand, math and I didn’t have the best relationship. I made it through elementary school, but once I got to 6th grade, I decided that I hated math. It seemed like everyone understood what was going on in class but me, which would frustrate me even more. My parents took one look at my report card and were immediately concerned. That is when they decided that I needed some extra help, and started sending me to tutoring. Looking back now, I realize that if it wasn’t for that I would probably still hate math. A little extra help now can make a huge difference in the future, because once you have a solid foundation, building up is a piece of cake! A few years later, at the age of 16, I got my very first tutoring job at the same place that I used to go to for math tutoring! Since then, I’ve tutored children of all age groups in a variety of subjects, ranging from ABCs to SAT prep. My favorite part about teaching is the amazing kids I get to work with, and helping them reach their full potential.
Teaching Style: I believe that it is very important to be able to connect with students and create an environment where they feel confident. Every child is different, and I like to base my teaching methods depending on the student. My goal as a tutor is to make sure my students understand what I am teaching, and more importantly, be able to excel in those subjects outside of the tutoring session. For this reason, I prefer a more hands-on approach with lots of examples and practice problems, because after all “practice makes perfect”!
