Bio: I recently graduated from Rice University with a degree in Applied Mathematics, so I have a great understanding of how mathematics is used in the real world. At Rice, I focused on robotics. I have written and conducted two robotic research papers. Thus, I now know what is most important for students to understand for math applications in the real world.
Over the past 4 years, I have tutored over 600 hours of mathematics ranging from middle school to sophomore college math. I have enjoyed helping young people get up to speed on math.
I have developed methodologies to address each student's particular needs, whether the student has a learning disability, is looking to get ahead, or is somewhere in between. I am also an Eagle Scout.
Teaching Style: I am very patient and understand the importance of meeting the student at their level. My priority is to help students achieve their personal goals. My style is to always bring the math lesson back to a few basic simple rules. Learning math Is essentially learning how to apply simple rules to different problems. When the student gets a firm grasp of these rules, they are empowered to apply them to new problems.
I also teach by asking the students probing questions. I never just tell the student the answer or blatantly tell them exactly what they should do. Instead I try to make it a conversation to where the student comes to the correct method by themselves.
Teaching & Tutoring Experience: Most of my work with students has been one on one tutoring. I have successfully tutored a girl with learning disabilities through high school graduation. I have successfully helped more typical students get A's on their next test. I have successfully invented new ways of explaining mathematical concepts so students truly understand why something works the way it does.
